Azienda Agricola San Bonifacio, Villa Bartolomea, Norditalien
"Azienda Agricola San Bonifacio" is on one hand an alley cropping system with annual crops between
between dense, wide and diverse rows of trees to provide habitat for birds and pollinators.
In the alleys, oats, wheat, soy, maize and winter cover crops
including legumes are rotated, inbetween corridors of plum, dogwood, hazel,
oak, ash, bear elm, holly, privet, wild apple and pear. On the other hand, each short end consists of polycyclic forestry with poplar and walnut for timber, and hazel, alder and maple etc. as "nurse trees". (These nurse trees reduce temperature fluctuations and wind, increase humidity, permeate the soil profile and contribute to higher biodiversity.) When the poplars are taken down, edible mushrooms are grown on the stumps. Book us for a lecture to learn more.
